Visiting delegation of Lebanese law students from the University of Beirut

04/12/2023

On 20 and 21 November 2023, the Cour de cassation received a delegation of Lebanese students from the French-language law programme at the Lebanese University of Beirut.

The students, who are the top of their year's DESS (postgraduate diploma) in litigation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, were able to meet and discuss subjects of common interest with Ms. Stéphanie ROBIN-RASCHEL, a judge referee to the First Civil Chamber and an arbitration specialist. She explained the role of the juge de cassation in this highly technical area.

The students were also given a presentation on the organisation and workings of the Cour de cassation by elder judge Mr. Patrick MATET, as well as a tour of the Court by the curator of the institution’s library. They were also able to attend the public part of the hearing of the Court's financial, economic and commercial chamber.

This visit is part of the Association des hautes juridictions de cassation des pays ayant en partage l'usage du français (AHJUCAF), in which the Lebanese Court of Cassation and the French Cour de cassation are particularly involved. Indeed, the first presidents of these two courts are members of the association's Bureau. This visit gave Mr. Thomas FRINCHABOY, Registrar at the French Cour de cassation, in charge of the AHJUCAF, the opportunity to talk about the work carried out by the AHJUCAF (in particular the association's publication on giving reasons for the decisions of the Supreme Judicial Courts, Dire le droit et être compris, Cotonou (Bénin) – 7th annual meeting of the AHJUCAF).

Such a meeting opens up the Cour de cassation to law students and maintains the important existing links with legal and judicial institutions in Lebanon. Lastly, it forms part of the Cour de cassation's international strategy to promote continental law and the French-speaking world.
