20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Rome Statute

14/11/2022

The Court of Cassation, in collaboration with the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, organized on 24 October 2022 a symposium to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court.

This event, which was held in the Grand Chamber in front of nearly 200 people, was opened by Christophe Soulard, First President of the Court of Cassation; François Molins, Prosecutor General at the Court of Cassation; Marc Perrin de Brinchambaut, Judge at the International Criminal Court representing the President of the Court; Mr. Piotr Hofmanski and Mme Mandiaye Niang,  Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court representing the Prosecutor of the Court, Mr. Karim Khan.

Many international experts in international criminal justice – diplomats, academics and practitioners – then participated in a debate that shed light on the centrality of the principle of complementarity between the International Criminal Court and national jurisdictions.

After a first historical reminder of the birth and role of the International Criminal Court, by Mr. Bruno Cotte, Honorary President of the Chamber and former judge of the Court, two round tables followed on the construction of an international justice system and on a common international criminal justice culture.

Addressing both the past and future prospects, the speakers reflected in a rich and fruitful reflection on the latest advances in the fight against impunity, as well as on the efforts required to achieve a comprehensive and effective international criminal justice system.
