Conference of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union on the impact of the health crisis on the functioning of supreme courts

27/10/2021

On 21 October 2021, First President Chantal Arens participated to an online conference of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union, themed “COVID-19 crisis and the functioning of supreme courts”.

Participants discussed the situation in which the supreme courts, and more broadly the national courts, found themselves during the health crisis, as well as the measures taken to adapt to it: reorganization of work, strengthening of IT systems, and development of new working methods.

Generally, despite the disparity between national situations, the supreme judicial courts of the European Union have demonstrated adaptability and reacted smoothly in order to ensure the continuity of their activities, without major impact on the case backlog. The crisis was also the occasion to accelerate the digital transformation of courts.

Participants expressed their enthusiasm to resume their exchanges within the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union and decided to meet again in May 2022 in Stockholm for the Annual Conference of the Network, under the theme “Open data and artificial intelligence”.
