12/10/2021

On 8 October 2021, First President Chantal Arens welcomed at the Cour de cassation (Court of cassation) Ms Beatrijs Deconinck, First President of the Belgian Court of cassation to discuss the role and the functioning of the French and Belgian Courts of cassation.

This meeting  is in line with the Cour de cassation (Court of cassation)’s international strategy, which aims at strengthening bilateral cooperation with European supreme courts. Given the similarities between the French and Belgian Courts of cassation, this meeting gave the opportunity to present the Report of the Study Committee “Cour de cassation 2030”, which focus on the different prospects of evolution of the Cour de cassation (Court of cassation) (the Report is available only in French at the following this link). As currently involved in the reflections on the reforms of the Belgian Court of cassation, Ms Deconinck provided inputs on the various recommendations of the Report and shared the Belgian Court of Cassation’s practices.

First President Chantal Arens and First President Beatrijs Deconinck also discussed the role of the Cour de cassation (Court of cassation) within their respective judicial systems. The two heads of court addressed the dialogue with the lower courts and the internal functioning of the two courts, among other topics.

In conclusion, First President Chantal Arens presented the important work carried out by the Cour de cassation (Court of cassation) on the open data of courts decisions. She also introduced the pseudonymization and anonymization programs based on artificial intelligence. A similar project being conducted in Belgium, First President Beatrijs Deconinck showed a great interest in these innovations. The two heads of court agreed to meet again to further discuss this topic.
