18/06/2021

On 18th of June 2021, the Court de cassation (Court of cassation) took part in the annual colloquium of the Franco-British-Irish Committee (F.B.I.C.C.) on the theme of "Justice in the pandemic: lessons learned and the future" ( by videoconference).

Mr Echappé and de Larosière de Champfeu, elder judges, and Mr Dary, judge, shared the experience of the Cour de cassation (Court of Cassation) during the sanitary crisis.

Discussions focused on the role of national courts in reviewing restrictive measures adopted by States, as well as the means used to enable courts to continue their work despite the crisis.

Despite the functional difficulties generated, the crisis provided an opportunity for national courts to develop new working methods and highlighted their role as guardians of the rule of law in our democratic societies.

The colloquium provided an opportunity to give an overview of the functioning and experiences of the French, British and Irish courts, while considering the lessons to be learned from the crisis.

The participants were pleased that the gradual improvement in sanitary conditions allows for a resumption of meetings between jurisdictions. The next colloquium of the F.B.I.C.C. will be organised in june 2022 in Belfast.
